Royals Draft and "The Slump Buster"

The 2011 amateur draft is coming up (Mon 6/6-Wed 6/8) and while it is probably the least relevant of all the drafts of major sports because so few players drafted actually make it, it is still exciting. Especially since the Royals once again have a top 5 pick and top picks are always exciting. Dayton Moore, the Royals GM, is notoriously very secretive about moves he makes and his ideas going into the draft. This can be evidenced by the trade of Zack Greinke last December to the Brewers that was so secret that none of the major media outlets (ESPN, Fox, MLB Network, Yahoo, etc..) knew it was being discussed until it was done.Last year in the draft the Royals took SS Christian Colon at 4th overall from Cal State Fullerton, which of course, no one expected.

This year everyone is talking about how there is a lot of college pitching depth and that KC will take a college pitcher so that he (or she????) can arrive about the same time as their wave of prospects and bolster the rotation. After reading some names rumored to be there when the Royals pick, I would be disappointed if Moore took many of them, the only exceptions would be Gerrit Cole or Trevor Bauer both from UCLA. I still think they need to take the player with the highest upside no matter how far they are from joining the Boys in Blue. That being said, the two guys I would most like to see are Dylan Bundy a HS pitcher from Oklahoma who is a gym rat and seems to be breed to be superstar. There is a great interview with him at Pine Tar Press. By all accounts, Bundy will not fall to #5. The other player is the legend Bubba Starling who is committed to play football and baseball at Nebraska. He knows he has a tough decision no matter who picks him. His agent is Scott Boras so he will be demanding about $6 million signing bonus. Scott Boras is also the agent of Eric Hosmer. Bubba is from just outside KC, so they have the best chance of getting him to forgo his college football career.

To the Team in KC right now, Sean "Slump Buster" O'Sullivan is not good at pitching. He has given up 5 or more runs and lasted no longer that 5 innings all but one time. The one time he lasted longer, he lasted 5.2 and gave up 10 runs, and 5 HR to the Rangers. Last night he gave up 7 runs in 2.2 innings. This was against an oddly bad Minnesota Twins team. I wonder how much more we are going to trot him out there. I know Nate Adcock isn't A LOT better and neither is Vin Mazzaro, but they have more raw talent and may even strike a batter out once in a while, but we don't want that.

Stuff

Politics, I hate politics. My basic feeling is that of Edward the Long-shanks in Braveheart where he says "the problem with Scotland...is that it is full of Scots." The problem with politics or government, is that it is full of Politicians. Too bad we can not just breed them out like King Edward tried to do. Since the system is so set in its ways, someone who tries to run honestly and not as politically, would be laughed off.

Baseball is awesome. This year is particularly exciting so far for me as a Kansas City Royals fan. I was born in October 1986. So I suppose I was a bit of a bad luck charm for the franchise, since we haven't had a successful October since my birth. Anywho, the team is winning right now. It reminds me of 2003. We came out of nowhere that year behind the mantra of eccentric manager Tony Pena "We Believe." This year is supposed to be a wasted year as we wait for our young prospects to be ready for real action. For more in depth info on the wonder kids, go to Royals Review , Royals Authority or Pine Tar Press. However, the current players decided they didn't want to waste this year. Most of the 2011 Royals are either in a make or break year after years of disappointment (Alex Gordon, Kyle Davies), or trying to restart their career after injury or a bad reputation...or actually being bad (Jeff Francoeur, Jeff Francis, Melky Cabrera, Bruce Chen). Basically, the players are playing for a job with the Royals or another team, most likely another team. The fact that they are playing well right now is not only surprising, it creates a bit of a conflict.
They called up #1 prospect 1B Eric Hosmer last week , he is a tremendous talent and was destroying AAA pitching. He also started last year in A ball and is 21 years old. So far he seems to not be in over his head, and will surely help the team. I am very excited to see him progress, but I would have rather seen guys who we need to get something for of at some point if they are worth anything, such as Kila Ka'aihue, and Clint Robinson. Both of them are over 25 and play 1B, and hit balls hard. We will never know if Kila could hit big league hitting, because he only had 326 at bats over 3 years. Clint has never even had a chance to fail, that could change with an injury this year, but it is unlikely otherwise. I think the front office got too excited about the mirage of a good team.

NBA Playoffs. I am not a fan of the NBA. College basketball is far more entertaining in my opinion. The recent sweep of the Lakers by the team closest to my current residence, Dallas Mavericks did get me a bit excited. I used to think I was too heavily biased against the NBA because I had never gone to a game. I changed that this year and went to a Mavs vs Clippers game. I disliked the NBA even more afterward, it has a Harlem Globetrotters feel in person. The league decided at some point that the game itself was not enough to keep the fans attention, even though it is the most consistently excited sport to watch and the only one my wife, Krista really enjoys watching on TV with me. The squeak of the shoes and chants of the crowd being drowned out by the Black Eyed Peas and a mic'd up net make it worse....not better.

Drake: Part 1

This is a story I started on a road trip from KC to Dallas. It will be updated it in parts, I hope it creates a cult following with everyone super excited to read the next installment...

I woke up in a dark room tangled in wet sheets. My dream must have been intense because the room was cold as ice. I was quite surprised the sheets weren’t frozen to my naked body. I quickly wrapped them back around me as I searched the strange walls for a light switch. I found none. As I wandered the cube of a room, I felt no doorway or window. What was this place and how did I get here? Was I kidnapped? Was I the victim of a copycat of the Saw movies? I was not prepared to cut off my own leg to get free, nor was I planning on killing anyone. I dropped to my knees expecting cold concrete, but I felt plush shag carpet.

It was then that I noticed I was wearing cold wet socks, a fine accessory to sweat filled sheets. I crawled along the soft carpet to feel any kind of trap door or escape hatch from this dungeon or tower or guest room. As expected, I found only yarn fibers. As I collapsed into my hands, my legs extended out and kicked the wall, except it didn’t sound like a wall. It moved like a door. I instantly perked up. I quickly turned around and felt the newly discovered surface for a knob. I found it but it was only big enough to pinch between my thumb and index finger. I gave it a jiggle and it opened silently. I assumed that on the other side of the door was another room or a hallway. I tried to stand and hit my head on a metal ceiling, yet the floor was even softer carpet. I continued forward in the pitch black. I occasionally reached my arms out to see if there were any options besides straight forward, there never were. I crawled for about 10 minutes until I felt around to see if there was room to stand. I stood much more slowly this time, with my hands shielding the back of my head. Once I stood, I slowly walked forward until I ran into a soft mattress, it too was wet.

I felt the mattress gently so I wouldn’t startle whoever might be in this bed covered in sweat. It kind of grossed me out that I was touching a bed covered in another’s perspiration. As I was nearing the head, I got punched directly in the back and I face planted on the aforementioned, sweat soaked bed. I quickly reeled onto my back and kicked like a mule, hoping to catch my assailant in the chest. I hit only air. Could this person see in the dark?

I decided I could try to reason with them. “Stop, I come in peace, I am an American from Cincinnati, I woke up in a room similar to this about an hour ago.” I caught another punch in my bare stomach.

Then my assailant responded in a obviously masked voice, “what’s your name, and why didn’t you announce yourself when you entered?” I chuckled under my breath, because this voice was that of a woman, disguising herself as a man.

“My name is Drake, what is your name ma’am?” I responded, unwilling to give me last name quite yet and wanting my new friend to stop making a fool of herself with her disguise.

“Was I that obvious? My name is Madeline.” She said sheepishly

“So, how did you know I was there?”

“I heard you crawling and grunting your way towards me, I backed up into the corner hoping you couldn’t see that I was no longer in bed, I don’t take rape lying down.”

“Well that certainly wasn’t my intention, I am just looking for a way out or at least find out where I was. I assume you awoke in your bad wrapped naked in wet sheets wearing wet socks?”

“No socks for me, kind of jealous actually,” Madeline hinted.

“You know how we could have sweated that much in a 40 degree room?”

“No idea, I thought about it not being sweat, but that led me down some depressing ideas.”

“Well, I found a door for tiny people from my room to yours. Want to search for one from your room?” I suggested,.

“It’s as good an idea as any, should we search under the bed for any supplies…or clothes?”

“I can’t believe I’m such an idiot, I checked the floor for a trap door, but not under the bed for any supplies.”

“Well don’t beat yourself up, there is nothing there, you find a door?” She chuckled in my general direction.

“Yeah, it’s over here, I hope I don’t get my ass kicked again.” We both laughed as we crouched down to the door.

This door was not quite as small or quiet as the one from my room, I worried that whoever put us in this situation would hear or in some other way notice that we were on the move. I was a little relieved to think that our capturer was small enough to get around the corridors easily enough, automatically giving me size advantage. My relief disappeared when I remembered that they had gotten us here without our knowing and dumped us cold rooms in wet beds. This thinking was worrying me.

“Now, I said I am from Cincy, where are you from Maddy?” I had to stop my mind from running.

“I’m from Cincinnati too.”

“Well, that might help, we can assume we are in or near Cincinnati or at least Ohio right? Can you think of any buildings with metal ceilings and carpeted floors or any interactions you have with midget with access to strong drugs?” I asked half-jokingly.

Madeline chuckled, “I have never met a ‘little person’ in my life.”

As we searched our minds for who would do this and why, our bodies crawled through the small hall way. While it seemed to be getting smaller, there was a slight breeze. This seemed to be a good sign, but I didn’t want to jinx it.
